He was 25 when he was elected Minnesota State Treasurer in 1974, making him the youngest constitutional officer elected in Minnesota state history. (Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1975-76)
He ran unsuccessfully for the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1970.
He was the son of Minnesota Chief United States District Judge Miles Lord.
His brother, Miles "Mick" Lord Jr., served as Assistant Minnesota State Auditor.
He had diabetes.
He died of a heart attack. His funeral was held on June 11, 2008 at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Excelsior, Minnesota. He was buried in Acacia Park Cemetery in Mendota Heights, Minnesota.

He was elected to become Minnesota State Treasurer in the 1974 election. His official term end date is uncertain due to his resignation. The date listed is the election date. One article stated that he resigned in mid-November, 1974. W.R. "Bill" Glaeser's margin of victory over James "Jim" Frank Lord was approximately 100 votes so a recount occurred. After the recount James "Jim" Frank Lord was declared the winner by 48 votes. Allegations of voter fraud were cited in the aftermath of the recount.
