His father served as Mayor of New Ulm, Minnesota.

He ran unsuccessfully as the Republican Party endorsed candidate for the Minnesota House of Representatives in the 2000 election. His opponent, Nora Slawik, defeated him by 69 votes so an automatic recount occurred. The recount confirmed that Nora Slawik had won, by 79 votes.
