Toensing, the Minnesota Legislative Manuals, 1876 and 1877, and the Minnesota Journal of the House, 1860 list his last name as Cleary. The Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1860 lists Clearly.

He moved to Ohio in 1849. He came to New Dublin, later called Lasheen, Minnesota in the spring of 1855.
