He moved to St. Paul, Minnesota in 1961 after he accepted a job with West Publishing Company. He lived in Mendota Heights, Minnesota at the time of his death.

He died after battling multiple myeloma. His funeral was held at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in West St. Paul, Minnesota.
