He was first elected to the United States Senate as a Unionist; his second and third terms were as a Republican.

He moved to St. Paul, Minnesota in 1855. He then moved to Winona, Minnesota in 1856.

He died in Washington, D.C., before his term expired in the United States Senate, and was buried in Greenmount Cemetery, Baltimore, Maryland.
