He was the first Chair of the Chisago Lakes Hospital District Board. He served on the board from 1955 to 2004.

He died from a brain hemorrhage at Fairview Lakes Regional Medical Center in Wyoming, Minnesota. His funeral was held at Chisago Lake Lutheran Church in Center City, Minnesota. He was buried in Chisago Memorial Park in Chisago City, Minnesota.
