He was born on a farm.

He moved to Blooming Prairie, Steele County, Minnesota in 1899.

He was a member of the Lions Club, Masonic Orders, and the Elks.

He died in Hudson, Wisconsin and is buried in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Plot D, 1746. The Senate Journal lists his death date as October 5, but the U.S. Veterans' Gravesites, ca.1775-2006 and his gravestone lists his death date as October 3.
