However, on December 22, 1857, he requested and was granted a leave of absence so he could attend to important business transactions. George Bradley was named Speaker Pro Tem that same day. On March 12, 1858 the House declared the Speaker's chair vacant. John S. Watrous was absent until June 2, 1858.
