He was one of eleven children. His parents, Aaron B. and Gertrude, were the founders of Preston, Minnesota.

As a young adult he traveled over the United States in railroad boxcars and lived as a hobo.

He was a member of the Sigma Delta Chi Journalism Fraternity.

He died from complications related to pneumonia in Ortonville, Minnesota. His funeral was held at the First Congregational Church in Ortonville, Minnesota.
