Board of Barber Examiners

Function:

The board examines, registers, and licenses barbers, and enforces statutes regulating barbers, barber instructors, barber schools, and shops.

History:

The 2004 Legislature moved the licensing responsibility for cosmetologists from the Commerce Department to the Barbers Examiners Board, and renamed it the Board of Barber and Cosmetologist Examiners. The merger took effect in 2005.

The 2009 Legislature split the Board of Barber and Cosmetologist Examiners back into two separate boards, effective July 1, 2009.

The Board receives a direct appropriation from the general fund for all operating expenses. All revenue received by the Board is deposited in the general fund as nondedicated receipts.

Membership:

The board is comprised of five members - four barbers and one public member - all appointed by the governor.
