Oil by Rail
In 2014, Minnesota passed various oil train safety measures in the supplemental appropriations bill. The safety of oil transported by railroad cars continues to be a focus of concern this legislative session. Hazardous derailments over the past few months in Ontario, Canada, West Virginia, and Illinois have spurred further discussion on how to prevent a similar accident from happening in Minnesota, as many trains travel through the state carrying crude oil from the Bakken Fields in North Dakota. Pending state legislation related to train safety is currently making its way through the House and Senate. On May 1st, the Federal Department of Transportation released its final rule to make rail cars carrying hazardous materials safer.
