Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD)
Preliminary test identifies CWD-positive wild deer in southeast Minnesota (MN Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR) News Release 1/21/11)
This month’s DNR News Release regarding a CWD-infected wild deer was the news Minnesota was hoping to avoid. Since 2002, when testing for chronic wasting disease in our wild deer population began, Minnesota has been fortunate to be able to report no positive wild deer cases of the disease. That changed when it was reported that a deer harvested in 2010 tested positive in preliminary tests. Subsequent tests at a federal laboratory confirmed the initial CWD diagnosis (MN DNR News Release 1/26/11).
CWD has never been shown to be a risk to human health but it does have the potential to affect the heath and size of the Minnesota deer herd. The 2006 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation—Minnesota reports that Minnesota “big game” hunters spent over 209 million dollars in 2006 alone. Obviously, a healthy deer herd affects hunters and non hunters alike.
Given the importance of the deer herd to Minnesota, the Department of Natural Resources has written a Chronic Wasting Disease Response Plan to tackle this ongoing issue. The Michigan DNR document, Chronic Wasting Disease and Cervidae Regulations in North America (October 2010) illustrates that most other states are taking this disease seriously as well.
