Gray Wolf Management Returning to Minnesota
At the end of January, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will re-assume management of the nearly 3,000 gray wolves in Minnesota. The final rule, removing Endangered Species Act protection for gray wolves in the Western Great Lakes Distinct Population Segment (DPS), was published in the Federal Register on December 28, 2011 and took effect on January 27, 2012. This rule provides the final decision on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s proposal, published in the Federal Register on May 5, 2011.
The goal of ensuring the long-term survival of wolves in Minnesota while addressing wolf-human conflicts that inevitably result when wolves and people live in the same vicinity is not a new challenge for the DNR. As it did after previous delisting rules in 2007 and 2009, the DNR will manage the state's wolf population by state statutes, rules, and provisions of a wolf management plan. The 2012 Minnesota Legislature is currently considering legislation (HF 1856) laying out a wolf hunting season. Additional bills may be introduced as the session progresses.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will monitor wolves in Minnesota for five years after the delisting to ensure that their recovery continues.
