The Minnesota Sunset Advisory Commission
A number of states have experimented with so-called “sunset commissions” over the years. Sunset commissions are panels established to evaluate government agencies and services.
In 2011, the Minnesota Legislature created the Sunset Advisory Commission. The commission’s mandate is to “make recommendations on the abolition, continuation, or reorganization of each affected state agency and its advisory committees and on the need for the performance of the functions of the agency and its advisory committees”. The law established a schedule for the review of all agencies. The process of evaluating the first group of agencies began in November 2011; commission findings and recommendations will be presented to the 2012 Minnesota Legislature.
The Minnesota Legislative Reference Library has gathered information on Minnesota state agencies for years. Using that material as a starting point, we have created an Internet guide, Sunset Advisory Commission: Groups Under Review in 2011-12. Information is presented for each agency including a brief historical overview and links to laws, reports, Internet resources, and more.
As part of this effort, librarians have scanned many historical annual and biennial reports. These scanned reports are now part of our Edocs pre-2003 Minnesota publications collection, an ongoing effort to create electronic copies of older state documents.
The Library’s Sunset Advisory Commission guide will be updated as additional groups of agencies are reviewed in the coming years.
