Protection of Minnesota's Waters
Minnesota - a land of 10,000-plus lakes, rivers, streams, and extensive underground water resources. Managing the state’s waters for recreation, for the protection of aquatic ecosystems, and for a sustainable and safe water supply is an ongoing effort shared by many.
The Legislative Library has recently received a number of reports dealing with various aspects of water in Minnesota. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resource’s report, Long-Term Protection of the State’s Surface Water and Groundwater Resources and a report by the Citizen’s League, To the Source: Moving Minnesota’s Water Governance Upstream, focus on water resource planning, protection, and management.
The Minnesota Department of Health’s Environmental Public Health Tracking Program recently completed a report on drinking water in Minnesota: Drinking Water Quality: Community Water Data & Measures 1999-2007.
An annual report prepared by the Metropolitan Council tracks lake water quality in the Twin Cities: 2008 Study of the Water Quality of 192 Metropolitan Area Lakes.
