Aging America

Health Rankings report coverAccording to the U.S. Administration on Aging, by 2030, there will be about 72.1 million older persons, more than twice the number in 2000. In Minnesota and across the nation, we are trying to understand how these changing demographics will impact individuals, families, and society. From a state government perspective, policymakers are looking at how this demographic trend will impact the state’s economy and the financing and delivery of government services.

Last year's presentation by the Minnesota State Demographer, Demographic Changes and the State Budget, provides a glimpse of the potential social, economic and fiscal impacts of Minnesota’s changing population. A separate presentation by the demographer looks more specifically at human services implications of changing demographics, including issues of aging: How Demographic Changes are Transforming Minnesota & the Social Service Landscape. The Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) is already preparing for these changes with initiatives such as, Aging 2030, that focus on long-term care needs and costs. A recent DHS report, Community First Services and Support Recommendations, examines the ongoing development and sustainability of home-based and community service programs for the elderly and people with disabilities in Minnesota.

While concerns regarding the quality of life and health of Minnesota’s aging population will continue to provide challenges, there is some good news for the state. The United Health Foundation recently released, America's Health Rankings Senior Report 2014. This report examines issues affecting the elderly including abuse, poverty, neglect, and exploitation, and provides state-by-state snapshots of the states' results. For the second year in a row, Minnesota ranked first in the nation.
