Text: May 23, 2005The Honorable Steve SviggumSpeakerMinnesota House of Representatives463 State Office BuildingSt. Paul, MN 55155The Honorable Dean JohnsonMajority LeaderMinnesota Senate208 State CapitolSt. Paul, MN 55155Dear Speaker Sviggum and Majority Leader Johnson:Although this legislative session has been marked with modest achievements, I remain disappointed that after five months, no real progress has been made on key issues important to Minnesotans. In fact, of the 4,900 bills introduced, only 123 bills have been delivered for my consideration -only two of which are budget bills.Though many in the legislature, including newly elected members of the DFL House campaigned on an agenda of "getting things done," that promise has not been realized. Indeed, I have made a significant offer to resolve differences but remain troubled to see that the Senate DFL' s latest offer creates an expectation that no agreement will be reached. Therefore, in order that we may fulfill our obligation to the people of Minnesota, it is my intention to issue a Proclamation calling for a Special Session of the legislature to begin one minute after the last house of the legislature adjourns its regular session. It is my hope and expectation that doing so will result in real progress toward a common agenda.Toward that end, I remain available to meet with you to achieve this goal.Sincerely,Tim PawlentyGovernorC: Members of the Minnesota Legislature
