A STATEMENT FROM THE GOVERNOR -- December 9, 2008

Saint Paul – Data from the 2007 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) will be released on Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. CST at http://timssandpirls.bc.edu/. Education Commissioner Alice Seagren will hold a press conference at 10:00 a.m. CST Tuesday at the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul to discuss the results.

TIMSS is the largest worldwide study of student math and science achievement. Minnesota 4th and 8th grade students participated as a “mini-nation” in the 2007 TIMSS due to state and private funding. Minnesota students previously participated in the 1995 TIMSS.

Key findings from 2007 TIMSS show:

• Minnesota’s 4th grade performance gain in math was among the largest of any of the 16 countries that participated in both the 1995 and 2007 TIMSS

• In 2007 4th grade math, Minnesota students scored just below the top four achieving nations and significantly ahead of 29 nations.

• In 2007 8th grade math, five nations scored significant higher than Minnesota and 44 nations scored significantly lower.

• The mathematics performance of Minnesota 4th and 8th grade students was better in 2007 than in 1995.

• In 2007 science, Minnesota was outperformed by very few countries at either 4th or 8th grade and significantly outperformed the U.S. at grade 8.

• In both 4th and 8th grade science there was no significant change in how students performed in 2007 compared to 1995.

The following is a statement from Governor Tim Pawlenty regarding the performance of Minnesota students on the 2007 TIMSS:

“Minnesota has aggressively raised our standards and academic rigor. These strong results show our efforts are paying off. We’re proud of our Minnesota students and teachers, but there’s a lot of work ahead to further improve student performance and ensure that our kids are equipped to compete in the global economy.”
