GOVERNOR PAWLENTY ANNOUNCES METROPOLITAN COUNCIL DISTRICT 10 FINALISTS -- August 24, 2005

Governor Tim Pawlenty today announced that he has accepted three finalists recommended to him by the Metropolitan Council Nominating Committee for an unscheduled vacancy on the Metropolitan Council in District 10.  District 10 includes the Anoka County cities of Blaine, Circle Pines and Lexington, and the Ramsey County cities of Arden Hills, Falcon Heights, Lauderdale, Mounds View, New Brighton, North Oaks, Roseville, and Shoreview, and the portion of Spring Lake Park that lies in Ramsey County.  The vacancy occurred as a result of the resignation of Mary Krinkie on May 9, 2005.  Krinkie had been a member of the Metropolitan Council since July 2004.  Eight people applied for this position.  The finalists are John Q. Doan, John M. Kysylyczyn, and Fred E. Meyer.

Doan, of Blaine, is the MnPASS program director with the Minnesota Department of Transportation.  He is a lieutenant in the Civil Engineering Corps of the U.S. Naval Reserve, director of the St. Thomas Academy Board of Trustees, and chair of the Minnesota Council on Asian-Pacific Minnesotans.

Kysylyczyn, of Roseville, is self-employed in home remodeling and restoration.  He is a member at-large of the Boy Scouts of America Northern Star Council, and previously served as the Roseville mayor and as a member of the Roseville City Council.  He was also a member of the I-35W Corridor Coalition and the League of Minnesota Cities Policy Committee.

Meyer, of Roseville, recently retired as vice president of Ulti Med, Inc., after nearly 40 years as a business professional in strategic planning, marketing development and management.  He serves on the Children's Safety Center Network Board of Directors, and chaired the Fourth Congressional District Republican Party and the St. Paul Republican City Committee.

The seven-member Metropolitan Council Nominating Committee, which recommends candidates to the Governor, conducted a public hearing on July 11th in Blaine to accept statements from, or on behalf of, applicants for the position.  The Nominating Committee members who made these recommendations were William Pulkrabek, Chair, Sherry Broecker, Mike Burton, Dave Clark, Cyndee Fields, Paul Gaston, and Mark Schiffman.

The Metropolitan Council coordinates planning and development in the seven county metropolitan area and directly operates several regional services.  The Metropolitan Council consists of 16 metropolitan citizens appointed from geographically defined districts in the seven county metropolitan area and a chair.  All 17 members are appointed by the Governor to four-year terms that are co-terminus with the Governor.
