A STATEMENT FROM THE GOVERNOR -- August 10, 2006

The following is a statement from Governor Tim Pawlenty regarding the arrest of 21 suspects in the United Kingdom as part of a plot to blow up passenger jets flying from the U.K. to the U.S.

“The arrests in the United Kingdom should serve as a reminder to all of us that we live in a world where extremists still wish to bring harm to innocent people. We must continue to be vigilant in our efforts to thwart terrorism and ensure that law enforcement officers have every tool available to them to keep our citizens safe.

“At this point there is no indication that this foiled plot targeted flights bound for Minnesota, but the investigation is ongoing. Officials in my office and our Homeland Security and Emergency Management Division at the Department of Public Safety have been in contact with officials in Washington, D.C. and will continue to be apprised of the situation as more information becomes available.”
