Frequently Asked Questions About the Minnesota Legislature

What is the current pay scale for Representatives and Senators?

A legislator's salary is $51,750 per year, effective July 1, 2023. The Legislative Salary Council prescribes salaries of Minnesota Legislators. The Council issues a report by March 31 of odd-numbered years with any recommendations for changes to legislator salaries, which take effect July 1 of odd-numbered years.

Lawmakers are also allowed to collect a per diem for living and travel expenses seven days a week during the regular legislative session. Per diem rates are typically set by the House Rules and Legislative Administration Committee and the Senate Rules and Administration Committee.
