He ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic-Farmer-Labor party endorsement at the district convention for the Minnesota Senate in the 1996 election.

At the time of his election, he was the only black member of the Legislature. (Pioneer Press, February 21, 1999)

He ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic-Farmer-Labor party endorsed candidate for Minnesota State Auditor in the 2002 primary election. He lost the endorsement to Carol Johnson.
