He was of Scottish-Irish descent.

He came to Minnesota around 1891. He lived in Lanesboro, then Winona, Minnesota. He moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1906.

"Later on, he was nominated for the Supreme Court of the State, but at the last moment the Press in Minneapolis turned against him, and this resulted in his defeat." (In Memoriam: Senators William B. He was a Grand Master of the Ancient Order of United Workmen (A.O.U.W.).

He was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.

He died in Hennepin County, Minnesota.
