Toensing, Progressive Men of Minnesota, 1897, and the Minnesota Legislative Manuals, 1881, 1883, and 1885 list his last name as Van Hoesen. The Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1872 lists both Van Hoesen and Van Huesen.

He came to Hastings, Minnesota in 1854.

"Though brought up a Democrat, Mr. Van Hoesen says that in the second year of the war he saw that the only political party which was trying to save the nation's life was the Republican party. So he came to believe in its principles." (Progressive Men of Minnesota, 1897, p. 95)
