He was honorably discharged from the United States Army Guard due to a physical disability.

He was a member of the Rolla Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, the Zarathan Blue Lodge of the Masonic Order, and of the Scottish Rite.

He died at the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His funeral was held at First Congregational Church.
