The History of Minnesota and Tales of the Frontier, 1900 lists his country of birth as Lower Canada.

He came to Fort Snelling, Minnesota in 1837. He lived in Crow Wing, Minnesota in 1848. He moved to Sauk Rapids, Minnesota in the fall of 1849 and created the first farm in that part of the Minnesota Territory.

He was one of the original land owners in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota.

He established the Sauk Rapids Frontiersman newspaper.
