He moved to Princeton, Illinois when he was six months old, with his parents. They moved to Webster County, Iowa in 1875. He moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota when he was 19 years old. He moved to Nome, Alaska in 1900. He moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1907 to study law. He returned to Alaska in 1910. He returned to Minneapolis, Minnesota in the fall of 1910.
