He was a member of the Republican Party when he served in the United States Congress.

He was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination as an Independent for the United States House of Representatives in 1962.

He died in Falls Church, Virginia. His body was cremated and his ashes were buried in Danebod Lutheran Cemetery in Tyler, Minnesota.
