Toensing lists his birth year as 1845. His great great granddaughter says he was born in 1811. The Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1881 lists him as being 69 years old which matches the 1811 year.

Toensing lists his death year as 1915. His great great granddaughter says he died in 1881 which explains why he wasn't present for the extra session.

He lived in New Hampshire, then Iowa, before he came to Minnesota in 1852. He was one of the first white settlers in the Rice Lake area, in what was to become Dodge County, Minnesota, in 1854.

His great great granddaughter thinks he was affiliated with the Republican party.
