Toensing lists his birth year as 1824. A relative says it was 1829. Toensing lists his death year as 1891. A relative says it was 1890. The History of Minnesota: from the French Explorations to the Present Time, 1873 lists him as being 24 years old in 1856.

He came to the United States before 1850 and became a United States citizen in 1855.

According to a relative, "Tom was
court-martialed three times; acquitted twice, judged guilty the third time. The third court martial was later reversed and his military rank as Captain restored but not his brevet [honorary] rank as Colonel."

He died in Fort Monroe, Virginia.
