Toensing and the Minnesota Legislative Manuals, 1945, 1951, and 1953 list his last name as Letnes. The manuscript from the House memorial service lists Letness.

He was of Norwegian ancestry.

He was raised on a farm near Neilsville, Minnesota.

He was President of the Minnesota Flying Farmers in 1950.

After he retired he moved to Tucsan, Arizona where he died.
