The Fifteenth Legislature of Minnesota: Biographical Sketches, St. Paul: Press Printing Company, 1873 lists his birth year as 1822. Toensing lists 1812. The Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1878 lists him as being 56 years old.

He moved to the Rocky Mountains and worked in the mines for two years. He came to Minnesota in 1867. He moved to Mendota, Minnesota in 1868.

His party affiliation when first elected was provided by The Fifteenth Legislature of Minnesota, 1873.
