He came to America in 1850, with his parents. They settled in Dane County, Wisconsin, then moved to Iowa. He came to Minnesota in 1856. He returned to Decorah, Iowa in 1861. He moved to Bloomington, Minnesota in 1868 or 1878.

The Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1887 lists his post office as Blooming Ferry. That may have been a typo. Toensing lists Bloomington Ferry.
