Toensing lists his last name as MacDonald. The Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1881 lists McDonald. The Minnesota Legislative Manuals, 1877 and 1879, the St. Paul Pioneer Press, November 10, 1877; Progressive Men of Minnesota, 1897; and the Biographical Sketches of the Officers of Minnesota and the 19th Minnesota State Legislature by C.L. Hall, 1877 list Macdonald. The Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1878 lists both Macdonald and McDonald.

He was of Scottish ancestry.

He came to the United States in 1847 or 1848. He lived in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. He moved to St. Paul, Minnesota in spring 1855. He came to Belle Plaine, Minnesota in fall 1855. He then lived in Shakopee, Minnesota in the early 1860s. He moved to St. Paul, Minnesota in spring 1867. He moved to St. Cloud, Minnesota in January 1875.
