He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, the Scottish Rite bodies, and Aad Temple of the Mystic Shrine in Duluth, Minnesota.

He helped found the Koochiching County Historical Society and the Old Settlers Association.
