Toensing, Biographical Sketches of the Officers of the State Government of Minnesota and the 19th Minnesota State Legislature by C.L. Hall, 1877, and the Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1877 list his last name as Scriver. The Minnesota Legislative Manual, 1879 lists both Scriver and Schriver.

His was born in Canada East (the portion which became Quebec).

He came to Minnesota in 1856, settled in Northfield.

He was Secretary and a member of the Board of Trustees for Carlton College.
