History:

The Office of Tourism was established in 1983 within the Energy and Economic Development Department, a predecessor of what is now known as the Employment and Economic Development Department (DEED).

In 2004, the Legislature abolished the Office of Tourism and established Explore Minnesota Tourism as an office in the executive branch with a director appointed by the governor (see Laws of Minnesota 2004, chapter 171, section 5). The director was to be under the supervision of the commissioner of DEED.

Agency heads:

The Office of Tourism is headed by a deputy commissioner, who shall be appointed by the governor. The deputy commissioner is under the supervision of the Commissioner of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) and serves in the unclassified service.
