Apprenticeship Advisory Council

Active dates:1939-2007
Function:

Proposes occupational classifications for apprenticeship programs; proposes minimum standards for apprenticeship programs and agreements; and advises the Minnesota Department of Labor and industry on the establishment of policies, procedures, and rules relating to apprenticeship programs.

History:

Created in 1939 as the Apprenticeship Council. In 1974 it was made purely advisory and was stripped of the power to confirm the appointment of the director of the apprenticeship programs. In 1979 the assistant commissioner of education for vocational education or a designee was specified as the ex officio member of the council.

In 2007, the Legislature changed the Apprenticeship Advisory Council's name to Apprenticeship Board (see Laws of Minnesota 2007, chapter 135, article 7, section 2).

Membership:

8 members (3 representing employee organizations, 3 representing employer organizations, 2 representing general public; plus assistant commissioner of education for vocational education or designee, ex officio, in advisory capacity); terms governed by Minn. Stat. 15.059; compensation governed by Minn. Stat. 15.059.
