Governor's Council on Geographic Information

Active dates:1991-2009
Function: To coordinate in Minnesota the various activities in geographic information and land information systems in order to better share information and enhance the stewardship of geographic information in the management of public resources. To submit initial recommendations to the governor by 30 June 1992. (Source: News release, Minn. Department of Administration, 16 March 1992)
History: The 2009 Annual Report includes the following paragraphs:
"This is the last annual report from the Minnesota Governor´s Council on Geographic Information. Created in 1991 by an Executive Order from Governor Arne Carlson, the Council operated effectively for 18 years. This report celebrates the Council's major lifetime accomplishments and summarizes the highlights of the past year.

Our major accomplishment in 2009 was also our undoing. We have been working for several years to create a Minnesota Geospatial Information Office. Our vision became a Governor Tim Pawlenty Drive to Excellence (DTE) initiative in 2008. Based upon a DTE recommendation, legislation created the new office (MnGeo) in 2009 and replaced the Governor´s Council with a new advisory structure." (please see link below for complete Annual Report)

The Council has been replaced by the Statewide Geospatial Advisory Council and the State Government Geospatial Advisory Council, both of which advise MNGeo (The Minnesota Geospatial Information Office).

Membership: The council's eighteen members should have a knowledge and interest in the geographic information systems (GIS) field, and represent state government, local government, the federal government, higher education, and GIS users in the private and nonprofit sectors. Meetings are held in the metro area and greater Minnesota at least five times annually. Members are expected to serve on at least one committee (added 8/08).
