Governing Committee of the Minnesota Automobile Insurance Plan

Function: Directs the operation of the Minnesota Automobile Insurance Plan which provides for the placement of insurance for drivers and vehicle owners who are unable to obtain coverage in the open market.
History: The Minnesota Automobile Assigned Risk Plan (MNAIP) became effective December 18, 1942. The name was changed to the Minnesota Automobile Insurance Plan. The Plan became statutory effective January 1, 1972. All insurers writing automobile insurance in Minnesota are required to participate in the MNAIP.


Membership: As of 2012, 12 members; 2-year terms; per diem for public members.
The Governing Committee consists of nine voting members, five of which are Plan subscriber members, and four of which are public members. There are also three non-voting company members.
