Uniform State Laws Commission

Also known as:
Commission for the Promotion of Uniformity of Legislation in the United States
Minnesota Commission on Uniform State Laws
Function: To study needs for uniform legislation. The Commissioners, as members of the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws volunteer their services to draft uniform acts for adoption by the states and promote their adoption in Minnesota.

Minn. Stat. 3.252 states the commissioners shall:
(1) represent this state in the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws;
(2) examine legal subjects on which uniformity of legislation in the different states is desirable;
(3) ascertain the best means to effect uniformity;
(4) represent Minnesota in conventions of similar commissioners of other states;
(5) cooperate in the consideration and drafting of uniform acts for submission to the legislatures of the several states; and
(6) prepare bills adapting the uniform acts to our statutes for introduction in the legislature.

The commission shall keep a record of all its transactions.

History: The National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL) is a 114-year-old organization of approximately 350 members representing all fifty states. It drafts state legislation in the area of private law, focusing primarily on areas of significant legal complexity where uniformity of law among the states is particularly important.
Membership: The Commission on Uniform State Laws consists of four appointed commissioners and any persons who have served as appointed commissioners for 20 or more years.

The unpaid Minnesota Uniform Law Commissioners work with Commissioners from other states, the District of Columbia,
U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico to prepare uniform acts that address complex and technical issues of commercial and
other private law for introduction in their legislatures.
