Advisory Council on Licensed Traditional Midwifery

Function: Advises the Board of Medical Practice regarding traditional midwifery licensure, practice standards, complaints/discipline, and provides for distribution of information regarding standards.

History: The Minnesota Legislature enacted a law in 1999 establishing a licensure system for traditional midwives. The Board of Medical Practice is responsible for administering the law and providing information to consumers and other interested persons.

The Advisory Council on Licensed Traditional Midwifery was reviewed by the Legislative Commission on Planning and Fiscal Policy (LCPFP) in 2013 as part of their biennial duty required by Minn. Stat. 3.885 Subd. 11. The LCPFP's 2013 Recommendations called for keeping the council.

Membership: The Council is composed of five members: three traditional midwives, one physician who has been or is currently consulting with licensed traditional midwives, and one homebirth parent.
