University of Minnesota Excellence Commission
Appointing Authority: Governor, Speaker of the House, Senate Subcommittee, U of M Board of Regents
Function: Reviews University's ranked areas of excellence, review investment efforts in interdisciplinary initiatives from 1998, make recommendations on how the University can develop further centers of excellence that will receive national ranking in the top ten within the next ten years, identify centers which have the best potential to meet this goal. Examines University scope, mission, and financing and proposes ways to refocus or refine these missions or offerings. Identify undergraduate programs that would benefit from collaboration with other private and public schools both in and outside the state of Minnesota.
The commission on University of Minnesota excellence expires on December 31, 2002.

15 members. Four must be appointed by Governor, including chair of the commission. Four appointed by Speaker of the House of Representatives. Two members of the MN House of Representatives may be appointed. Four appointed by the subcommittee of committees of the Senate committee on rules and administration. Two senators may be appointed. Three appointed by chair of UM Regents Board, may include current board members. All members selected based on their expertise in complex organizational structure and should include leaders of business, industry, or post-secondary institutions.
