Transportation Accessibility Advisory Committee

Function: To advise the Metropolitan Council on the development and management of policies regarding accessibility of all aspects of fixed regular route and special transportation services for persons with disabilities. The committee also advises the council on long-range plans to meet the accessible transportation needs of the disability community.

History: The advisory committee has been in existence in one form or another since the establishment of the Regional Transit Board in 1984 (1984 Minn. Laws Chap. 654 Sec. 116 Subd. 2). In 1989 Minn. Laws Chap. 269 Sec. 35 Subd. 3, the group was referred to as the Transportation Handicapped Advisory Committee. In 1992, the group was provided with an official name, the Transportation Accessibility Advisory Committee (1992 Minn. Laws Chap. 390 Sec. 1).

Advisory to:
Membership: The committee consists of 16 members: a chair appointed by the Metropolitan Council, seven members chosen by disability and senior groups in the metro area, and eight others, also selected by the Metropolitan Council, who represent districts that are combinations of the Metropolitan Council's 16 districts. At least half of the committee members must be certified as ADA paratransit eligible under the Americans with Disabilities Act and be active users of public transportation in the metro area.
