Cold Weather Resource Center

Function:

To foster economic development by promoting, attracting, and coordinating cold weather research, testing, and related activities throughout the state. The center must provide coordination and services to institutions and companies that conduct cold weather testing and research.

History:

On November 16, 1988, the Governor's Commission on Cold Weather Research proposed the establishment of a cold weather resource center in "the nation's icebox," International Falls. Governor Rudy Perpich who appointed the commission and directed it to begin its study last May, said he will ask the Legislature to set aside funds to support the resource center.

In December, 1989, the U.S. Department of Energy approved Minnesota's request to use $700,000 from the Stripper Well Settlement Agreement to create the Center.

Newspaper articles incidate that the Cold Weather Resource Center closed after the Legislature failed to fund it in 2001.

Membership:

The Minnesota Cold Weather Resource Center is managed by its President/CEO under the direction of a sixteen member Board of Directors representing industry, public organizations, educational institutions and the private sector from within and out of the state. The Center operates with a staff of three people and the offices are located in International Falls, MN.
