Governor's Council on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday

Function:

The council helps plan, coordinate and execute observances of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Junior's birthday at the state and local level in Minnesota. The council's purpose is to ensure that the contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. are recognized throughout the State of Minnesota.

History:

The council was first established by Gov. Rudy Perpich. Successive governors have re-established or continued the council during their time in office.

Membership:

15 members; appointed by the governor; no compensation. Meetings are held at least monthly.
