Health Advisory Committee

Function: The Department of Corrections organized the Health Advisory Committee to assist the Department in the following ways: to study the delivery of mental and physical health care to the inmates of state correctional institutions; to study the environment in which inmates live and work; to make recommendations tot the commissioner of Corrections for changes which seem necessary or desirable for the improvement of the health and safety of prisoners.

The commissioner of corrections may use any funds available to him to provide for the payment of expenses of the members of the health advisory committee incurred in attendance of meetings under the provisions of Minnesota Statutes, Section 43.329. The committee is limited to 25 reimbursable meetings per year. (1975 Minn. Laws Chap. 204 Sec. 96)
History: The health advisory committee was organized at the request of the commissioner of corrections, Mr. Kenneth F. Schoen. The first meeting was held on March 28, 1974.

Fifteen formal meetings were held and many correctional institutions were visited by the committee members.
