On Holm's death in July 1952, Governor C. Elmer Anderson first appointed H. H. Chesterman (who had been assistant secretary of state). The public, however, felt that Mrs. Mike Holm would have been a better choice, and the governor then appointed her to serve until the November 1952 election. In the election, Mrs. Holm was elected to serve out the remainder of the term ending in January 1953 as well as the two-year term ending in January 1955. Mrs. Holm was defeated in the election of 1954 by Joseph Donovan.
