Winter Activities
We're fond of reminding people who balk at our long and cold winters that there's no bad weather - only bad clothing. So with the start of the new year, and perhaps resolutions to exercise more, the first few weeks in January are as good a time as any to get outside in Minnesota. The Library's final 2017 list of new reports received may provide the inspiration you need.
The Minnesota Health Department's Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) reviewed the "Active Schools Minnesota" program, a partnership between MDH and the Minnesota Department of Education. The report, Enhancing Physical Activity Practices in 14 Elementary Schools, evaluated the program's impact on pilot campuses. Among the examples of physical activities students engaged in? Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
High School students around the state also spend the winter skiing. Nordic and alpine ski records from the 2016-17 school year are published in the Minnesota State High School League's 2017 Yearbook & Record Book. If you're still not inspired to go skiing, perhaps reviewing the Department of Natural Resources' annual Game and Fish Fund Report will spur you to give ice fishing a try.
If you can't muster the courage to get outside now, you can visit one of the museums or zoos that receive Arts and Cultural Heritage Funds, summarized in this updated House Research information brief. Or bide your time until spring and check out the Northern Gardener: From Apples to Zinnias, 150 Years of Garden Wisdom from the Minnesota Historical Society Press.
