Minnesota Women's Legislative Timeline
On June 15, 2011, the Legislative Reference Library and the Office on the Economic Status of Women published an interactive online historical timeline. The timeline looks at the history of legislation affecting women enacted in Minnesota since the passage of 19th Amendment in 1920. The state laws featured on the timeline show the legislative progression of women’s rights in Minnesota since women earned the right to vote. The timeline also links to biographical information on women who have served in the Legislature.
Funded by a grant from the Minnesota Historical and Cultural Grants Program, this timeline is the culmination of research into the types of laws that were significant milestones for women in the state of Minnesota. Read more about the project in this press release.
Already the project sparked comments and praise. The June issue of MNIITEX Reference Notes, sent to libraries around the state, highlights the timeline as a great source for historical research. Katie Ziegler wrote in The Thicket blog from the National Conference of State legislatures, “The timeline is an enlightening read for Minnesotans, students of women's history, and anyone who is interested in the evolution of the legislative institution.”
We hope the timeline will be of interest to researchers and students over time, and plan to use the knowledge gained during this project to create additional policy-related timelines in the future. We appreciate the funds provided by the Minnesota Historical and Cultural Grants Program.
